Vienna, Horna. In its meeting, on 12 Dec. 2014, the General Assembly of
the United Nations’ Correspondents Association in Vienna-UNCAV, elected
Dipl. Ing. Mr. Abdalla Sharief of Horna-Horn of Africa News Agency, as
president for a three-years term. Mr. Sharief was born in Abba Island in
Sudan, and holds a Master’s degree in chemical engineering from the Tech.
University of Budapest. He has been managing Horn of Africa News Agency-
(Horna) in Austria and VIC since 1991.

Horna Agency is established in 1986 and was accredited to the United
Nations in Vienna in 1988, as well as to its organs: Office UN Office on
Drugs and Crime (UNODC), the UN Industrial Development Organization
(UNIDO). Both organizations are located in the Vienna International Centre,
along with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and the
Preparatory Commission for the Comprehensive Nuclear Test-Ban Treaty
Organisation (CTBTO).

UNCAV of which Mr. Sharief has become president, was founded in the
early1980s to serve the interest of journalists and correspondents of the
United Nations by becoming a beacon for enlightenment and for information
on the work and activities of the UN organizations in New York, Geneva,
Nairobi, the Hague, Rome, and Vienna.

The membership of UNCAV comprises journalists, reporters and media
personalities in information organizations. It also includes diplomats and
former United Nations experts. President Sharief expressed his gratitude to
the media professionals representing various geographical regions and
welcomed new ideas for the promotion and development of UNCAV. He
considered his election for the Presidency as a great honour, not only for
himself, but for the African continent and for HORNA and its founders.

He recalled the achievements of some remarkable ambassadors like the late
Dr. Abdulrahman Aden of Somali and of Ambassadors Hassan Abdul Wahab from
Sudan and Abdul Kadir Bekri Hamdan from Eritrea, the latter currently
acting as DG of Horna. President Sharief hopes for increased cooperation
with the United Nations Information Service at Vienna, the media
organizations in Central and Eastern Europe and the informational projects
benefiting youth in developing countries.
