The year is coming to an end, and 2010 is quickly approaching -- which means the next census is already underway. Although this process is familiar, it is very important to be cautious when dealing with this subject.

Workers with the Census Bureau are responsible for the very important task of counting every single person in the United States. At the same time, they record data regarding age, gender, race and many other categories.

Your household will be contacted by one of these workers either by mail, telephone or a physical visit. It is essential that you know how to ensure the person you are speaking with is a legitimate Census Bureau employee and not someone attempting to steal your personal information.

While there are federal laws to protect you, some criminals will still make attempts to get information for their own personal gain. Cases of identity theft by individuals posing as Census Bureau employees have already surfaced.

Here are some things to look for in order to ensure that the person you speak to is a legitimate employee of the Census Bureau.

All census workers that come to your door will have in their possession an official badge, a handheld device or personal computer to enter data, an official Census Bureau canvas bag and a confidentiality notice which may have been mailed to your household before the visit. You should always ask to see the badge of any individual who claims to be working for the Census Bureau.

Do not give your social security number, credit card numbers or banking information to anyone. Legitimate Census Bureau workers will not ask you for this information.

Another common scam is phishing -- attempting to steal information by using fake Web sites to look legitimate. While you may receive an e-mail from the Census Bureau requesting your participation in a survey, the 2010 Census will not be conducted via e-mail or the Internet.

The Census Bureau will not request personal information via the Internet, and will not send e-mail requesting personal identification number codes, passwords, social security numbers or similar access information for credit cards, banks or other financial accounts.

For further information regarding the upcoming census, including a link to find out whether e-mails you received are legitimate Census Bureau surveys, visit http://www.census.gov.

Remember, be cautious and don't become the next statistic of identity theft.
