After colorfully celebrating the Geez New Year, the people of Eritrea are preparing to mark Eid Al-Fater and Holy Cross holidays. The manner religious holidays are celebrated in Eritrea are unique, as they are observed by everyone, even though the people have diverse and different religious convictions. Such a unique custom is the product of the cultivated and refined culture the people have.
History has it that the people of Eritrea are one of the first people in the world to embrace Islam and Christianity. Christianity was introduced in the 3rd Century A.D., whereas Islam was introduced at a time the Prophet Mohammed was alive.
In many parts of the world religions were introduced through forced conversions attached with brutal invasions, expansion of empires or through preaching accompanied with hand outs. Where as the people of Eritrea willingly accepted both religions fully understanding their essence and meaning. Hence, the people of Eritrea view any given religious conviction or adherence as a choice. And therefore, fully understanding that the quintessence of any given religion is loving one another and mutual respect, Eritreans respect the choice of each other, and mark religious holidays with reverence. This has enabled the people of Eritrea to develop a unique and exemplary culture.
Eritreans have therefore conducted their day-to-day activities for over
14 centuries with mutual respect to each other under the umbrella of
rich spiritual serenity. Another proud addition to their history is the fact
that the people of Eritrea have fought side by side and united against the
forces of colonization and rightfully earned their independence.
This has allowed the people of Eritrea to enjoy a unique unity and religious tolerance amongst each other. The exceptional means the people of Eritrea mark their religious holidays is therefore, a product of their refined culture that has been founded upon the dynamics of harmony and respect for one another.
