Rural Development: Basis for Equitable Progress

Development or progress is real and fair only when it is evenly distributed in every corner of the country. The ongoing economic development in Eritrea compared to other developing countries is unique that the benefits of progress are evenly distributed among all parts of the community. In many countries the prevailing economic scenario is that of a privileged minority monopolizing the economy while the majority of the populations never get a chance at enjoying the benefits of economic development. But the people and Government of Eritrea have no desire for such kind of unjust progress.
The Eritrean people had paid a huge sacrifice to secure their right to self-determination not to create an environment where a few get to amass wealth while the rest wallow in poverty. It is to establish conducive grounds where each and every citizen has the opportunity to strive for a better and rewarding life.
Emanating from this outlook and guided by the objective of social justice, the Eritrean government's development strategy aims to give priority to disadvantaged rural areas and revive rural development so as to lay the foundation for a fair and just nation. The developmental works in different parts of the country are a living proof as to the efficiency of this strategy and the proud Eritrean culture of self-reliance can be seen working miracles there. Eritrean economic progress is thus measured not by the expansion of cities or the height of buildings but by the ongoing infrastructural works, agro-industry projects and the provision of social services that are facilitating the over-all national development. And this progress is truly appreciated and attested to not by those purposeless wonderers who live and drink off handouts from relatives but buy those women who had to travel miles to get drinking water and had never received any kind of maternal health care but now can get any social service they need w
ithin their villages. The measurement for real economic progress and just political system lies in securing equal socio-economic opportunities for all citizens!
